Outside
- Any wooden structures or material around the yard is an invitation for termites to live.
- If the lawn or neighbors lawn is overgrown, this can create pest problems.
- If the property has a deck, check it regularly to see if it has any signs of depleting materials.
- Any old trees or stumps could be a living quarters for pests.
- Overgrown vegetation can be a hiding spot for different insects.
Inside
- Brown stains on the wallpaper, baseboards, or by electrical outlets are signs of bed bugs.
- Check the foundation for any cracks or holes where pests or insects might be able to enter.
- Unused chimneys become home to many pests.
- Check the basement to see if it is dark and damp as many pests like this environment to live.
- Knock on wood structures to see if they are hollow from termites.
- Look for shredded paper, insulation, or droppings in the attic.
Prevention for Already Owned Property
If you have already purchased a property prior to establishing prevention methods, it is not too late! You can still help protect yourself against pests. However, don’t put it off too long before completing the following.
- Make sure downspouts are directing water away from the house and foundation.
- Clean your gutters regularly to not only allow for the water to drain, but to help keep pests away too.
- Keep any wood mulch away from the house.
- Seal any gaps around pipes that lead to the outside of the structure.
- Clear, clean, and consistently inspect the attic for chewed paper or pest droppings.
- Seal all your windows to help prevent unwanted entry.
- Trim low hanging branches, pick up leaves, and clean up landscaping to prevent housing for pests.
- Check for any water leaks or damp areas around the house, especially the basement.
- Use door sweeps to help seal up the doorways in and out of the structure.
